Since XIII century Latvia alternately was under authority of Germany, Poland and Russia. To Russia Latvia has passed in 1785 after the third section of Rech Pospolita. After October revolution of 1917 Latvia has received a chance of finding of the sovereignty and on November, 19th, 1918 has declared independence. On August, 5th, 1940 the country has been attached to the USSR as 15-th republic. On August, 21st, 1991 Latvia again has declared independence. The country is a member of the United Nations. A state system: The head of the state — the President. The highest legislature — unicameral parliament — the Diet. The supreme body of executive authority — the government led by the Prime Minister. |
